Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: The shocking story of Clint Eastwood.
In 1975, N. Richard Nash published a novel cry macho, which follows the journey of Mike Milo, a fallen rodeo star turned Texas horse breeder who is tasked with traveling to Mexico to retrieve the son of his former boss. Shortly after, he wrote the screenplay himself for sale in Hollywood.
Since 1988, Clint Eastwood has expressed interest in adapting it to film, but he was already busy with his last target on Inspector Harry. The project was temporarily taken over by Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Brad Furman, but it was never completed.
Thus, in 2021, Clint Eastwood takes the positions of producer, director and main performer. He reworked the screenplay of the original author, who had since died, alongside Nick Schenck, with whom he had already collaborated on Gran Torino and La Mule.
In keeping with Honkytonk Man and A Perfect World, Cry Macho looks at issues of surrender and redemption, as well as offering reflections on masculinity and the passage of time.
In front of the camera, Clint Eastwood goes from his recent roles as turbulent characters with strong character to be more vulnerable than ever. The most nostalgic will not be disappointed, as we see him again on horseback, against the background of the sunset, his silhouette intact, almost as in the beginning…
