The feature film “Superman” allowed Christopher Reeve to answer the icon for Marlon Brando. A dream experience? Not easily…
Responding to a legend like Marlon Brando should logically be an unforgettable moment in one’s career. However, Christopher Reeve, who co-starred in the first Superman, has no lasting memory of the experience. According to him, the standout comedian, who plays the on-screen father of Jor-El, the DC superhero, has somewhat rested on his award, more precisely the one awarded by the press.
“I’m not saying this provocatively, but I don’t worship Marlon Brando because I think he somehow got away with it.”said Christopher Reeve on David Letterman’s set in 1982. “He’s not the leader he could have been. He could have really inspired a new generation of comedians by continuing to work, but what happened was the press loved him. It didn’t matter if it was good or bad. He didn’t seem to care.”
“The way people looked at him as an institution, whatever he did, all of a sudden he doesn’t care.”Reeve continues. “And I’m sad that someone his age doesn’t care. That’s all. It’s just a shame that this man was forced into this form of hostility.”
Somewhat taken aback by Christopher Reeve’s monetary comments, David Letterman still questions whether working with Brando was interesting. “not really no”replies Reeve, who then elicits cheers from the audience, but doesn’t change the word one iota. “I had a great time, but he didn’t care. I’m sorry. He just took his check for two million dollars and left.”
“Everything is so important to me that it hurts when someone doesn’t put in the effort. But he’s a great actor, a great person. He’s just not motivated right now, that’s all I mean.”, adds Christopher Reeve. The actor ends with a laugh: “Marlon is going to kill me!”
