This is where it all begins: “There’s no going back between Claire and Louis” according to Kathryn Marshall

Alocine: This is where it all begins, soon to celebrate its two year anniversary. What is your best memory of filming?

Kathryn Marshall: There are many things that I enjoyed, but the memory that is still very relevant today is the day I shot my first scene. That was the day I was in a chef suit. It was very impressive to wear this work coat.

I found myself in this lofty kitchen, giving a speech to a dozen students. It was very emotional because when I said the first words, I saw the eyes of these actors/students looking at me with great respect. That’s when I said to myself “I am this character”.

How do you see Claire’s development?

I like it more and more and I like to play it more and more because it got many different colors. We started with a character who was a little rigid, a little classical, a little subservient to her son and a little in denial. Little by little, we are moving towards a character who has a sense of humor, who has more character, who dares to confront people, who dares to speak his mind, and who dares to make radical decisions.

As a result, it is much more interesting to play with strong, even sometimes violent words than weak and submissive ones. Claire’s evolution makes me very happy, and the humorous moments that are more and more present are very enjoyable to play.

Claire decides to put an end to Louis’ (Fabian Wolfrom) detention and kicks him out of the house. Is this the page that will reclaim this complicated relationship, or will she let Lewis get the better of himself?

Claire opened her eyes to her son through his relationship with Olivia. I think once this course has been taken, there will be no going back. It’s all embedded in them now. I think in the future their accounts will take this break into account. This will be crucial for the future.

Lewis has accepted a professorship at the Institute, which is not at all pleasing to Claire, who clearly prefers to distance herself from him. Should we expect open warfare between them in the corridors of the institute?

Claire doesn’t really want to confront her son anymore and wants to channel her energy elsewhere. She wanted to have no contact with him or even cut off the relationship completely. On the other hand, I think that her way of not cutting the cord is to provoke her mother. So Louis is going to do it.

Claire and Olivia (Virgin Cagliari) have become very close lately. Is a future between them possible? Can they get back together?

That’s what we ask ourselves with Virginie Cagliari (laughs). Admittedly, between the violent breakup and the friendly rapprochement that happened almost immediately, Olivia was nice enough not to fight Claire. He is a character that is very important to Claire because he is her confidant and her support. It is true that they were very good friends before falling in love and continue to be friends.

Because this is a couple that is so loved, I know that the public expects something every time we have a little co-starship on screen. There is something and there will always be something. Will the couple become official again? See you later.

Admittedly, the relationship between Claire and Olivia was important because it explored discovering homosexuality at the age of 50, something rarely mentioned in fiction. And yet this love story was quickly evacuated when so much could have been said…

I was very surprised that the couple lasted so long, admittedly. I think there will be further exploitation of this early rupture that may be recovered. They’re going to have to talk about it at some point because they never did.

Could another character enter Claire’s life? Is there another love story planned for your character?

Not at this time. In terms of lovers, I am not so spoiled (laughs). They couldn’t find me, maybe they aren’t candidates, or they don’t want to (laughs).

It is true that I am not the character who has had the most relationships in the series. Leave the writers alone. I think Claire is the unmarried character of the show, a hardened wife who values her independence and freedom very much.

In general, what awaits Claire in the next episodes?

The fact that Louis stayed at the institute will definitely create tension. Claire won’t be able to ignore him or avoid him forever. I think that’s why we’re going back to the new tension between Louis and his mother. This will be next now.

A new action of students entered the institute. Did you shoot scenes with them?

Yes, because Claire started going back to school. It’s funny because the new actors are the new students. It gets a little confusing. So you have to put them in the mood. But that’s okay, they get there pretty quickly. All the actors who arrived had already seen the series, unlike those who were there at the beginning. They immediately understand how it happens and immediately find themselves in the characters.

Do you have any other projects besides Here It All Begins that you can tell us about?

I’m going to shoot Meurtres en Béarn with Isabel Otéro for France 3. We start filming on September 25. So I go from here it all starts in four weeks.
