Actress Constance Wu has revealed that she suffered sexual harassment and bullying from an unnamed producer of the comedy series “Fresh off the Boat” during the show’s first seasons. This would have been one of the reasons for her controversial statement from her in 2019, when she complained on Twitter about the renewal of the series for another sixth and final season.
“I’ve kept my mouth shut for a long time about the sexual harassment and bullying I suffered in the first two seasons of the show,” the actress said while attending the Atlantic Festival, an interview event in Washington, DC. “Because after the first two seasons, once it became a hit, once I was no longer afraid of losing my job, I could start saying ‘no’ to harassment, ‘no’ to bullying this producer in E so I thought, ‘You know what? I read with that. Nobody has to know. I don’t need to cloud the career of this Asian-American producer. I don’t have to cloud the airing of the show.’ “
The outburst came during a conversation about his memoir, “Making a Scene,” which will be released on October 4 by Simon & Schuster. She said her work encouraged her to detail her experience on the sitcom.
“I realized it was important to talk about it,” Wu continued. “This show was historic for Asian Americans. It was the only show on a network in 20 years to feature Asian Americans and I didn’t want to overshadow the one show that featured us.”
Wu called the experience “traumatic” and even commented on the controversial tweets he sent out lamenting the renewal of the series for a sixth season.
“I wanted to start over where I didn’t have to do a show with all these memories of abuse. Some people knew. [o assédio] existed, and going to work every day with those people, who knew he was sexually harassing me, being ‘friends’ with him, sometimes felt like a betrayal, “he continued.” But I loved everyone on that team and I loved working in the show. But I had this story of abuse, which started the show, and even though I dealt with it after two years, I preferred to leave. “
Created by Nahnatchka Khan (“Apartment 23” series), “Fresh off the Boat” was inspired by chef Eddie Huang’s memoir and invested in a nostalgic tone, in the style of “Everybody Hates Chris”, “The Goldbergs” and “Amazing Years” “.
Set in the 1990s, it tells how boy Eddie’s (Hudson Yang) Taiwanese family has adapted to the culture shock of life in Orlando, Florida. The cast also included Randall Park (recently seen on “WandaVision”).
At the time of Wu’s complaint, many believed the actress was ungrateful after getting screening on the series and starting to stand out in her film career. She had gained a lot of projection in cinema thanks to the success of “Crazy Rich Asians”, in which she lived the great protagonist, and “Hustlers”, which she starred alongside Jennifer Lopez.
