Baby Groot: Did you know that a real tree inspired Marvel’s favorite creature?

Guardians of the Galaxy’s mascot, the adorable and plant-based Baby Groot was created by Filipino artist Anthony Francisco. And to create it, the latter was inspired by a tree like no other…

At the heart of Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2, the adorable Baby Groot (a kind of plant-based reincarnation of the first Groot who sacrificed his life to save his friends) literally blew all Marvel fans away.

While the little tree recently got its own series of shorts on Disney+, Filipino artist Anthony Francisco, who was commissioned to design the character, revealed his inspiration.

“When I first saw Baby Groot on the screen, I felt like I was getting my own son, so in a way, Baby Groot is a little Filipino boy.”This is how Francisco confided, invited to the microphone The Mexican Podcast.

Therefore, the artist gave life to Baby Groot’s juvenile mimics by observing his own child’s expressions. But as for the texture of the character, its trunk and bark, Francisco borrowed them from a very specific tree from his country of origin that he wanted to focus on:

“When my son was four years old, I wondered what I could add from my Filipino culture . Even if it is already a tree. But I wanted to use a very specific type of wood called ballet wood in the Philippines.

There are stories about her… that the white lady lives in the ballet tree. I just used some of his textures, his hanging roots, and Baby Groot’s trunks and innards.”

According to local folklore, ballet trees, believed to be the home of ghosts, are often planted by the roadside, and their cuttings can also become bonsai, such as Baby Groot, which – after being almost completely destroyed at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy – has started to grow again. in a small clay pot.
