“House of the Dragon”: the executive producer leaves the series

Following the departure of co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik, another big name left “House of the Dragon before Season 2: Executive Producer Jocelyn Diaz.

The “Game of Thrones” prequel was renewed for a second season shortly after the series premiere on HBO, which achieved high ratings. Information about Diaz’s departure comes from Deadline magazine, which revealed that the executive producer had a one-year contract with HBO, with an option for a second year, which was not activated by the company.

The executive producer’s departure comes shortly after series executive producer Miguel Sapochnik chose to leave production after serving as co-showrunner on the first season, alongside Ryan Condal.

Now, Condal will take on the role of showrunner for only the second season, as co-creator of the series and working side-by-side with fellow co-creator and executive producer, George RR Martin, author of this universe.

Upon Sapochnik’s departure, it was revealed that Sara Hess and Jocelyn Diaz would go on to executive produce the second season, alongside Vince Gerardis. However, this will not be the case, with Diaz leaving production and Condal continuously forming his team. Ron Schmidt, who also served as an executive producer on the first season, left the series in silence recently.

So far, only one addition has been made to the executive production of the second season of “House of the Dragon”: Alan Taylor, a veteran of the “Game of Thrones” universe, has joined the series as executive producer and director. Despite his resignation as co-showrunner, Sapochnik will continue as an executive producer.

“House of the Dragon” is based on George RR Martin’s book “Fire and Blood” and takes place nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones”, focusing on House Targaryen. Paddy Considine stars in the first season of the show alongside Milly Alcock, Emily Carey, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans.

In episode 6, which premiered this Sunday (25), the series took a 10-year time jump, with Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke playing the roles of Princess Rhaenyra and Queen Alicent, played by Milly Alcock and Emily Carey., Respectively.

Diaz returned to HBO with “House of the Dragon,” where she previously served as vice president of series and development from 2009 to 2011. Before returning to HBO as a producer, she served as executive vice president of original programming for the Epix channel. Jocelyn Diaz has an extensive track record and served as executive producer on the documentary film “Serena” and the “America Divided” series.

So far, six of the ten episodes of the first season of “House of the Dragon” have already premiered on HBO and HBO Max. The next four always arrive on Sundays at 10pm.
