Andor: Who is Mon Mothma, the character featured in Star Wars Episode 4?

Did you know this iconic character from the Star Wars saga in Episode 4 of Andor? The most die-hard fans obviously didn’t identify Mon Moth, one of the main figures in the rebellion with Princess Leia Organa.

Close to former senator Padmé Amidala, Mon Moth made his first screen appearance in Return of the Jedi (1983), dressed by actress Caroline Blackiston. Twenty-two years old, the character returned for the third episode of the prequel, Revenge of the Sith.

This rejuvenated version of Mon Mothma was this time portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly, although her scenes were ultimately cut by George Lucas during editing (but can be seen in the DVD bonuses). It doesn’t matter, because the Irish actor has had other opportunities to portray the character, most notably in the movie Rogue One (of which Andoria is a prequel), as well as the animated series Star Wars: Rebels.

In an exclusive interview she gave us, Genevieve O’Reilly talked about the character’s evolution, from her first appearance in Revenge of the Sith to Rogue One, where she takes over as the leader of the rebel movement. , whose Andor series precisely explores the genesis:

In Revenge of the Sith, I had the opportunity to play Mon Moth, a young woman making her senate debut. He was working with Padmé, and during the scenes where my character appeared, a rebel group was forming, including Bail Organa and other senators. (…) A few years later in Rogue One, Mon Moth is introduced as one of the leaders of the Alliance. In the Andor series, we meet him in the interim, when he continues to work in the Senate as a kind of double agent. (…) He still hopes to be able to form a resistance group of senators to oppose Palpatine, and it is at this point in his life that we find him at the beginning of the Andor series.

The Return of the Jedi and Rogue One movies, as well as the Rebels and Andor series, can be seen on Disney+.
