The Dahmer Series: Monster – The story of Jeffrey Dahmer does not go unnoticed. In one week, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s fiction opened stronger than Squid Game, accumulating more than 196 million hours watched. Consisting of 10 episodes, this transposition of one of the most famous criminal cases in the United States depicts the 17 murders committed by the “Milwaukee Cannibal”.
Many themes are discussed throughout the story. The creators are interested in the invisibility of a stigmatized community that struggles to be heard, systemic racism and police homophobia. The series is fully committed to its political treatment for the better rehabilitation of the victims and their families.
Still, after Dahmer’s release, members of the LGBT community (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) made their outrage known. On the platform, Netflix registered the series in the category of LGBT programs, to the dismay of the first interested party.
The tag lists all fiction – movies or series – related to the topic of sexual orientation and gender identity. Many express their dissatisfaction on social networks. The Netflix platform corrected the situation by removing Dahmer from this category. From now on, the series is only listed under the tags “Crime TV Series”, “Horror TV Series” and “US TV Series”.
Nevertheless, Jeffrey Dahmer’s crime has significance in the history of the struggle for the American LGBT community. Homophobia being one of the main themes explored by the series, this category seems logical.
In the city of Milwaukee where the drama unfolded, Dahmer’s success awakens old nightmares. Local channel WISN 12 News prepared a report to be interested in the reactions of the LGBT community – targeting Jeffrey Dahmer, himself a homosexual.
