In 1977, producer Don Simpson envisioned the script for Beverly Hills Cop. The script, which continues to evolve over seven years of rewriting, until its final version: Inspector Axel Foley, a brash and reckless Detroit police officer, arrives in California to investigate the murder of a friend. During the investigation, he discovers a wide network of drug trafficking.

Don Simpson, associated with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, offers Mickey Rourke the lead role, then Sylvester Stallone, who adds his own ideas to the script. But they are considered too expensive and the actor leaves the project two weeks before the start of shooting. The producing duo then manage to convince a certain Eddie Murphy to play the part.

He came into the limelight thanks to his talent as a comedian, especially in the show Saturday Night LiveThe actor started his career in cinema by storm. Beverly Hills Cop It became his biggest box office success, grossing $316 million worldwide (including a 2.9 million release in France). Nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Comedy, Eddie Murphy is becoming an international star.

Director Martin Brest also created one of the most important films of his career, which won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy and the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Based on this success, Beverly Hills Cop It has two sequels, produced in 1987 and 1994 respectively by Tony Scott, then John Landis.

After which the future of the franchise remains undecided for a long time. In 2013, CBS ordered a pilot episode for a series project about Axel Foley’s son, played by Brandon T. Jackson performs. But the chain does not follow.

Finally, Paramount is launching a new film based on a script by former Los Angeles Police Department officer Will Beale. In 2019, the production company announced that it had sold the distribution rights to Netflix for a fourth opus (as well as a possible fifth).

Titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley in VO, the feature film, which is expected to hit the streaming platform in 2023, will therefore see Eddie Murphy return to his legendary role opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
