She wasn’t ‘very nice’ to the boys.
The creators of ‘The Big Bang Theory’, Bill Prady and Chuck LorreThey have looked back and have revealed that a character did not make the cut after the pilot episode.
For the show’s 15th anniversary, Prady and Lorre were outspoken about rewriting the character of Penny, whose final version was played by Kaley Cuoco.
Originally, Penny wasn’t exactly nice to Leonard, Sheldon, or the rest of the group and tried to take advantage of them. This “evil” neighbor her name was Katie and she was given life by the actress Amanda Walsh.
“In the first pilot episode, the female character (who, at the time, was named Katie) was a bit tough,Prady commented to Entertainment Weekly.
Katy was “dangerous in a way and not very nice with boys“. In the test viewing, the audience “I hated her“explained the creators.
“They hated her, but it was amazing how people defended Leonard and Sheldon so much,Prady continued.
“Yeah, we didn’t realize that viewers would see them as children. They were innocent and childlike, despite their great intelligence. They were very vulnerable and the audience didn’t like a toxic presence around them,Lorraine added.
After that viewing, Walsh wanted to return to play the new version of Katie. However, the creators did not decide so and replaced it claiming that “she was so identified with that first character that it was not going to be possible to change her.”
Later they rewrote Katie to become Penny, cast Cuoco… and the rest, as they say, is history.
‘The Big Bang Theory’ has its seasons available in streaming on HBO Max.
