‘Finish the job’: Alan Rickman thought about leaving ‘Harry Potter’ due to fatigue and illness

A book-collection of Alan Rickman’s personal notes entitled “Madly Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman” (“Madly Deep: The Diaries of Alan Rickman”) will be released in October, but for now fragments of diaries have appeared in the press, shedding light on the actor’s relationship with his character Severus Snape in the legendary Harry Potter franchise. In the text, Rickman admits that, despite years of desire to leave the film, he still decided not to back down and bring the story of his ambiguous character to the end. However, in January 2002, when Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was being filmed, the work on the picture seemed to Rickman painfully endless.

It’s nice to see them all again, but it’s like a dream, as if the first Harry Potter movie never stopped filming.

Even then, the actor first thought about leaving the franchise, but the bosses of the film company did not allow him to do this.

Talked to agent Paul Lyon-Maris about my departure from Harry Potter, which he thought might happen. But here we are again in the gray area of project conflict. We repeat to the representatives of Warner Bros. Pictures, no more Harry Potter. They don’t want to hear it,” he confessed in his diaries.

During the filming of the next two films – “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” – Rickman repeatedly expressed his desire to quit. However, by 2006 and the start of filming of the fifth film “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”, the actor resigned himself and decided to continue, despite serious health problems – just then he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

I can finally say “yes” to the fifth part of “Harry Potter”. The argument that eventually won and helped to make a decision is: “Bring it to the end. This is your story,” he wrote. “I have finished reading the last Harry Potter book. Snape dies heroically, Potter describes him to his children as one of the bravest men he has ever known and names his son Albus Severus. It was a real rite of passage. One little piece of information that J.K. Rowling shared seven years ago – Snape loved Lily – is still a cornerstone to cling to.

Recall that Alan Rickman died at the age of 70 on January 14, 2016 already from pancreatic cancer, which he was diagnosed with a year earlier after suffering a microstroke. In addition to the role of Severus Snape, the actor is also known for his work in the films Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Sense and Sensibility, Alice in Wonderland, Die Hard and many others.
