In celebration of the film’s November release, in theaters tomorrow, we present a quiz featuring seven films, including one named after the twelve months of the year. Will you make it to 7/7?
It’s not uncommon for movie titles to include a time reference, be it day, month, or year. Examples are indeed numerous, but only in the fantasy and science fiction genres, where stories sometimes take place several years later.
Such was the case, for example, with Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey, released in 1968. The film is divided into four acts, at different times in the evolution of mankind, from bipedal hominids discovering the use of tools, to space. Explorations to the Moon and then to Jupiter.
In 1981, another famous director, John Carpenter, sent us a few years into the future, in a post-apocalyptic New York, with New York in 1997. The story of Gvelis Plisken (Kurt Russell), a former member of the special forces, has turned. out-la-loi, sent on a mission to retrieve the President of the United States, is taken hostage on Manhattan Island, which has become a giant open-air space. The film will have a sequel, Los Angeles 2013, which was released in 1996.
And recently, it’s another sequel to a cult film that also included a year in its title: Blade Runner 2049. Denis Villeneuve’s film takes place thirty years after Ridley Scott’s original version. If we find Harrison Ford there, this time Ryan Gosling plays the lead role of Officer KD6-3.7, a replicant working for the LAPD responsible for tracking down ex-models turned criminals.
