After battling Demorgogon in Stranger Things, David Harbor is back as the evil Santa Claus!

In Tommy Virkola’s “Night of Violent”, the American actor slips into the costume of St. Nicholas, one, real, one-of-a-kind. But Santa Claus lost his faith…

While she leaves gifts under the rich family’s tree, a group of mercenaries break in and take the family hostage. But Father Christmas is on the scene and he’s going to show them that good old St. Nicholas has more than one trick up his sleeve.

The trailer for this crazy action movie has just been released and it promises some great action scenes set to the beat of Christmas carols.

It must be said that the director Tommy Wirkola is used to this genre, we owe him two zombie film opus Dead Snow, the retelling of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters or the SF film Noomi Rapace, Seven. sisters.

Ahead of the trailer’s launch, AlloCiné spoke to the director, who told us he was inspired by Die Hard.

AlloCiné: Where did the inspiration for this badass Santa come from?

Tom Virkola : A little over a year ago, the producers of 87North sent me a script written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller (Sonic).

I was immediately interested because the movie was written for me as Die Hard with Santa Claus! I was afraid it would be a movie a lot And totally bogus, but actually everything is well balanced, be it action, humor and emotion.

It is a film with a big heart, a family film. I really wanted it to be a family Christmas movie as well as pure entertainment and action.

As a rule, you also write your own films. How did you add your trademark?

TW: This is the second film I’ve made without writing it yet, but when I read the script I knew I could write it. There is this black humor and this sense of rhythm and action that is unique to me.

“You’ve never seen such a Santa Claus”

It’s important to me to find an emotional connection to the film, and I did just that by focusing on the relationship between Santa Claus and the little girl he helps.

It’s really the soul of the film, and it’s an essential element in trying to drive this completely insane film. The studio never held me back and I could do whatever I wanted with explosive action scenes. You have never seen such a Santa!

David Harbor and John Leguizamo

What was your relationship with Santa Claus as a child? Did your Scandinavian background influence the film?

TW: When I was little, I was a little afraid of Santa Claus, who was actually often my grandfather disguised as this mysterious character. I recognized my grandfather’s voice and could not understand what was happening.

There is definitely a Scandinavian influence, especially from Norway where I come from. I grew up in the neighborhood where Santa is supposed to live; They tell you that he lives in the far north of Finland. Of course, it leaves a mark.

for that A violent night, I wanted to be a different kind of Santa. When we meet him in the film, he is depressed because he feels that the magic of Christmas is gone, that it is a marketing operation to sell products.

He realizes that no one believes him and Christmas anymore. Therefore, it is Santa Claus who tries to rediscover his faith and pass it on to others.

Thanks to this little girl, he will get his strength back because she really believes in him. Plus, we’ll discover the origin of Santa Claus, and I’ll put all of Norse mythology in there.

A mix of James Bond and John McClane

We will explain how he became such a force of nature, in every sense of the word: this mixture of James Bond and John McClane. There’s a snowmobile chase scene you’ve never seen before, except in James Bond and Die Hard 2.

I’ve always been a fan of snowmobiles, and I had so much fun creating this mind-blowing scene. I tried to shoot in natural conditions as much as possible in northern Canada, in Winnipeg, where it is colder at home. We suffered a bit due to the weather conditions, but it gave the film a perfect atmosphere.

David Harbor

Why did you choose David Harbor to play your Santa Claus?

TW : It was a natural choice because he is a real Santa Claus! (laughs) Look at his charisma, his physical strength and his sense of humor. He threw himself into this film tirelessly and trained like never before to pull off all the action scenes.

At one point we see Santa throwing a grenade at a bad guy in his pants. It’s part of a big action scene where Santa Claus fights over 25 mercenaries in all directions with explosions and stunts. It’s breathtaking.

All this to the rhythm of Christmas carols. Although the soundtrack is very classic, we found a collection of rock versions of Christmas carols that we all know. In particular, there isMerry Christmas everyone” In the 70s, the band Slade performed.

There are also plenty of other Christmas movies that should appeal to fans of the genre, right?

TW: Of course, this is a movie that has a lot going for itEaster eggs. We are especially referring to movies like: Maman j’ai missed l’avion, Le Sapin a les boules, Scrooge, La Vie est Belle and of course Die Hard!

We already feel the potential of the franchise. Is this conceivable?

TW: I’m still editing the film, so I haven’t explored that possibility yet. But I’m sure the studio is already thinking about it.

For my part, I’m ready to continue the adventures of this evil Santa Claus. I hope the public likes our film and we can go back to the Far North for a sequel.

The feature film, which stars David Harbour, John Leguizamo, Cam Gigandet, Eddie Patterson, Alex Hassell and Alexis Luder, hits theaters on November 30.
