Super Mario Bros Trailer: Is VF Better Than VO? An unexpected choice of English speakers!

The trailer for the animated film Super Mario Bros., released on October 6, has caused quite an incredible amount of enthusiasm on the Internet. Among the big themes is Chris Pratt’s voice on Mario, which isn’t to the taste of English-speaking fans.

Nintendo dropped a hit by revealing the first images of the Super Mario Bros movie live on October 6th! The trailer caused a lot of ink to flow, creating a surprising amount of excitement.

The flashy and dynamic trailer received a very warm welcome from the Mustache Plumber fans. If the quality of the animation is brought up, discussions will turn to dubbing.

Indeed, in video games, the blue-suited hero only expressed himself with little phrases like “let’s-a-go”, “it’s-a-me, Mario” or “mama mia”, sung by American comedian Charles Martinet.

The latter lends a very childlike edge to his Mario voice, with a stamp that goes very high in the treble. Nintendo and Illumination, the studio responsible for the feature film, decided to take a different direction here and give the character a “normal” voice for the first time.

Thus, Chris Pratt was chosen in September 2021 to vocally portray the most famous Italian plumber.

“Chris was cast because we felt he could give a good performance as Mario. Now that we’ve gone through fifteen takes and three-quarters of the way through the movie, I’m saying I love playing him as Mario.”said Chris Meledandri, head of Illumination.

From MARVEL to NINTENDO

For his part, Star-Lord’s interpreter in Guardians of the Galaxy shared his enthusiasm for the idea of getting into Mario’s jumpsuit.

“I worked closely with the directors and tried a lot before arriving at something I’m very proud of. I can’t wait for the audience to see and hear it. It’s a dub of an animated film, not a live-action film.”he noted.

“I’m not going to dress up as a plumber for the whole movie. I’m giving a voice for an animated, updated character, and it’s something you’ve never heard before in the Mario world.”he clarified.

However, after watching the trailer, English-speaking fans weren’t really convinced. The latter only hear Chris Pratt’s voice on Mario, no special color, and can’t see where he is “never heard of it” there.

Is VF better than VO?

Consequently, many American and English Internet users have turned to the French version of the film, which is closer to Mario from the video games than to Chris Pratt.

“Very good, I’m going to watch the Super Mario movie in French”, commented netizen Yong Ye, in a tweet that was liked and shared by thousands of other accounts. and for the specialized site IGN, “The French dub is delicious.”

For its part, Culture Crave states: France got a voice that sounds like Mario and we got Chris Pratt.

Another netizen, Ajay also created a stir by posting the VF trailer accompanied by this comment: “The French dub has a killer Mario voice!”

This “killer” is none other than Pierre Tessier, a very active dubbing actor, especially as the French voice of Ryan Reynolds.

Pierre Tessier, like Super Mario

He is also the voice of Arthas in the World of Warcraft games or Lt. Dan’s Lucifer series.

The team at Voix Ouf, our show dedicated to French dubbing, caught up with the actor who’s been lending his memorable voices, from Deadpool to Detective Pikachu through the Titanic villain. It also helped play out our concept of doubling iconic scenes.

Super Mario Bros, the movie will hit theaters on March 29, 2023.
