The eighth episode of “House of the Dragon” premiered this Sunday (9) and the conflicts in House Targaryen should ignite once and for all. The symbol of the beginning of this storm is in the final scene of the chapter, when King Viserys Targaryen is on the verge of death after the advance of the disease that afflicts him.
The episode features a dinner organized by Viserys that was supposed to lead to reconciliation in the dragon family. Apparently, Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower seemed to be getting closer again, even though their children weren’t helping much.
However, after dinner, Viserys is messed up and is exhaling her last breath. The king mistakes Alicent for Rhaenyra and tells his wife of the song of Ice and Fire, something her daughter had previously asked her father.
This question from Rhaenyra came before discussions in the throne room, when Daemon Targaryen cut off Vaemond Velaryon’s head after King Corlys ‘brother questioned the legitimacy of Lucerys and Jace Velaryon and called Viserys’ daughter a whore, as Corlys is badly injured. battle, there was a dispute over the throne of Driftmark.
Rhaenyra questions her father, confused by illness and medicated with poppy milk, about the burden of being the heir to the Iron Throne. Princess Targaryen is uncertain about her future and asks about Aegon the Conqueror’s prophecy (A Song of Ice and Fire).
“You told me it was our duty to keep the kingdom united against a common enemy. By making me heir, you divided the kingdom. I thought I wanted to, but the burden is heavy. It’s very heavy, ”Rhaenyra tells Viserys.
After all the events, from quarrels in the throne room to the family dinner, Viserys goes to his room in pain and Alicent tries to help him by giving him some poppy milk. Confused, the king mistakes his wife for Rhaenyra and claims to believe Aegon’s prophecy. However, Alicent realizes that the king is actually talking about their son and not their conquering ancestor.
At this point, Viserys continues to believe she is speaking to Rhaenyra and claims that the princess is the only one who can “unite the kingdom against cold and darkness”, being the “promised prince” of Aegon’s prophecy. Years later, the king still believes in her daughter and has not regretted making her heir to the Iron Throne.
However, misunderstood Viserys’ message, Alicent believes that his son Aegon will be the king’s heir and the prince who will unite the kingdom, especially since he was unaware of the prophecy.
With that, the episode ends with Viserys dead and apparently triggering the civil war in House Targaryen awaited by fans of the series. The last two episodes of “House of the Dragon” will feature a mad battle for the reclamation of the Iron Throne.
“House of the Dragon” can be seen on the HBO channel and on the HBO Max streaming platform, with episodes due out on Sunday. The last episode of the season arrives on October 23rd.
