“The house of the dragon”: the emotional scene of the last episode was improvised

The eighth episode of “The Dragon’s House” brought tense and conflicting moments, but also reserved emotional scenes. One of these was when Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) helped his brother Viserys (Paddy Considine), weakened by the progress of the disease, walk to the Iron Throne.

The context of the scene marks a disturbing discussion of Driftmark’s succession to the throne, after Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) was badly wounded in the battle for the steps. Vaemond (Wil Johnson), Corlys’ younger brother, claimed the position in the event of the king’s death.

Despite this, at the beginning of “The House of the Dragon”, Corlys had named Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) as his heir, as the boy is the son of Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Laenor (John MacMillan). However, the legitimacy of Lucerys is questioned by many people, something that was put on the agenda by Vaemond and caused a tremendous conflict in the throne room.

That said, the one who decides to put an end to the matter is Viserys, who arrives by surprise in the room and heads for the throne, extremely weakened, but determined. At some point, the king stumbles and drops the crown. After that, Daemon helps his brother to ascend the throne and puts the crown on his head.

The scene was praised by the audience and many have called it one of the most emotional moments in “The House of the Dragon” so far. And the event is even more memorable for a reason: the scene wasn’t in the script and it was improvised. This was revealed by Geeta Patel, director of the eighth episode of the series.

“During filming, on the first day of rehearsals, the crown fell off Paddy’s head and Matt picked it up and we moved on,” Patel revealed in an interview with the magazine. Weekly entertainment. “We didn’t stop (filming). There was a discovery of that moment. So the three of us met and they were like, ‘We feel it. It was the turning point in our relationship. ‘ After that, it was just a moment of silence, “she added.

The director of “House of the Dragon” says that the scene made the relationship between Daemon and Viserys even more symbolic: “I was so grateful that the accident happened, that the crown fell because it turned out, at least for me. , a very special, heavy moment and a turning point for a story that began in the pilot episode: ‘Hey, I want your crown and in this ending here I will put the crown back on your head. I will help you rise to your throne’ ” .

Furthermore, Patel also confirmed that King Viserys is dead. At the end of episode eight, thinking of speaking to his daughter Rhaenyra, the character talks about Aegon the Conqueror’s prophecy to Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and may have triggered the Dance of Dragons in House Targaryen.

“House of the Dragon” is in the final stretch of the first season and promises to bring more excitement to fans of the series in the next few chapters. Episodes of the “Game of Thrones” spin-off arrive on Sundays and can be seen on HBO and HBO Max. The final episode of the season will be released on October 23rd.
