In Midnight Club, Mike Flanagan and his partner Leah Fong throw us into the heart of a hospice for terminally ill teenagers. The latter meet every evening to tell each other horror stories, which quickly turn into an exit.
The series itself is adapted from the novel of the same name by Christopher Pike (real name Kevin McFadden), a youth horror specialist. His bibliography includes no less than thirty books, some of which are haunting stories of teenagers in the midnight club. As a child, Pike’s works influenced Flanagan, it is not enough. And this is not the only one.
In an interview he gave Vanity FairHe, who now lives in seclusion, told a sad anecdote behind the writing of his novel The Midnight Club. Its main character Ilonka (Iman Benson) is inspired by a young girl whom the writer met in the 90s, who was a big fan of his books. When she becomes terminally ill with cancer, she makes one last wish to meet Pike. It will be two weeks.
The young woman will tell them during their interaction that she started the tradition at the hospital where she was staying. In the evening, she met with other sick children to read them scary stories imagined by Christopher Pike. A sort of book club that allowed them to escape in the evening…
