The HBO series “House of the Dragon” is heading towards the end of its first season and a second has already been confirmed. But in the end, how many seasons will the show have? Author George RR Martin has a hunch.
During the first eight episodes of the series, “House of the Dragon” covered a 21-year period of Westeros and Targaryen history, using constant time jumps between episodes.
While Rhaenyra and Alicent started the series as two young women around the age of 15, today they are both adult women and mothers of several children. With so many time advances, there is a doubt as to how long the series will last.
Will HBO and Ryan Condal, who will take on the role of showrunner on their own from season two after Miguel Sapochnik’s departure, have enough stories to extend the series’ storyline beyond two seasons?
According to George RR Martin
George RR Martin, author of “A Song of Ice and Fire”, the unfinished book series that inspired the “Game of Thrones” series, and also of the book “Fire and Ice”, from which “La casa of the dragon, ”he has a presentiment. Using your blog name “Note to the blog“, Martin commented on the time jumps and how many seasons he believes“ House of the Dragon ”can reach.
“I also wanted to tackle the ‘time hops’ in ‘House of the Dragon’,” Martin said in a post Tuesday. “Not with any kind of official ‘statement’, but with some reflections on the matter. There is a lot to say. I don’t have time to say it now, though. Maybe on my next blog, or the next … or maybe never, as the work continues to accumulate, “continued the author, who works on” The Winds of Winter “, the sixth book of” A Chronicle of Ice and of fire “, which has been late for years.
“Very briefly though, I think Ryan handled the ‘jumps’ very well, and I love both the young Alicent and Rhaenyra and the adult versions, and the actresses who play them. (Actually, we have a fantastic cast and I love them all), “commented Martin.
He continued: “Would we like to have more time to explore the relationship between Rhaenyra and Ser Harwin, the marriage of Daemon and Laena and their time in Pentos, the birth of several children and all that we had to skip? Clear.”
“But there are only a few minutes in an episode (more on HBO than the network shows I wrote about once) and only a few episodes in a season. Less and less as time goes by, apparently, “explained Martin.” When I was a kid, the shows had 39 episodes per season. When I was writing Beauty and the Beast, I was 22. “
“’The Sopranos’ had 13 episodes per season, but a few years later, ‘Game of Thrones’ only had 10 (and not even that, these past two seasons). If “House of the Dragon” had 13 episodes per season, maybe we could have shown all the things we needed to “jump back in time” … although this created the risk that some viewers would complain that the series was too much. “slow”, that ‘nothing happened’ “.
“As things stand, I’m thrilled that we still have 10 hours each season to tell our story. (‘Rings of Power’ is only 8, as you may have noticed, and my AMC series ‘Dark Winds’ is doing seasons of 6 episodes). I hope it stays true, “said Martin.
He then went on with a forecast of a number of seasons for the series: “It will take four full seasons of 10 episodes each to do The Dance of Dragons justice, from start to finish.”
The Dance of the Dragons is the name given to the civil war that is about to begin after the death of King Viserys I (Paddy Considine). Dance is a long, complicated and complicated war. Until now, the series had laid the groundwork for the start of such a war, and now it’s about to begin.
Martin also confirmed a doubt about the number of children Viserys had with Alicent: “YES, Alicent gave Viserys four children, three boys and one girl,” Martin said. “His youngest son Daeron is in Oldtown, we haven’t had time to work with him this season.”
Despite Martin’s opinion that it would take four seasons to tell the story of Dance with Dragons in a positive way, things won’t necessarily go that way. So it’s still open how many seasons “House of the Dragon” will have at the end, and only time will tell whether or not HBO will follow the author’s recommendation.
The first eight episodes of “House of the Dragon” are available on HBO Max. Episode 9, the penultimate of season 1, arrives on HBO and HBO Max next Sunday (16), at 10pm.
