In the entertainment industry, a wide variety of factual series have been released that have surprised viewers. “Mythbusters” (as it is called in Spanish) is one of them.
Hosted by special effects experts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, each episode debunks or proves some of the most popular rumors with the help of scientific procedures.

The ‘Mythbusters’ episode that helped a man in prison
During 2005, the episode ‘Hollywood on Trial’ appeared on the small screen, in which Jamie, Adam and their team tried out some of the most famous effects in the entertainment industry.
Among the various experiments they performed, one stood out in which the hosts dropped a lit cigarette into a puddle of gasoline to see if it would ignite. however, they found this to be scientifically impossible.
This worried John Galván, who, when he saw the broadcast of the program in 2007, realized that his innocence could be proven.
The series “Mythbusters” helped a man out of prison
John Galvan’s life took an unexpected turn when in September 1986 (he was 18 at the time) he was unjustly accused of starting a fire in a building located southwest of Chicago.
At the time, as reported on the Innocent Project website in October 2022, John’s statement was fabricated by detectives after the boy was physically abused.
It should be noted that the fire was allegedly started after John and two others involved threw a bottle of petrol into the building and then threw away a lit cigarette, which contradicted the ‘Mythbusters’ episode.
In a conversation with the “Innocent Project” Galván highlighted what he thought while watching the “Mythbusters” chapter that could help prove his innocence.
Another piece of evidence that helped Galvan prove him right was an investigation conducted in 2007 by the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which was picked up by The Scotsman newspaper on February 28 of that year.
In it, experts conducted various tests in which they dropped a lit cigarette into a puddle of gasoline. however it never caught fire. They also poured the liquid directly into the cigarette, but nothing happened.
John Galvan faced a series of trials (some never completed) and appeals so that in 2022, after spending 35 years in prison, he could be exonerated. after his case was dismissed by the Cook County District Attorney’s Office. The same happened with the other two boys involved.
