Netflix launches basic plan with ads, also in Brazil; to know more

Netflix finally announced, this Thursday (13), the arrival of its new economic plan, Basic with Ads, which will arrive in a select number of countries, including Brazil. The information was revealed during a corporate press conference, in which the was present.

Initially, the Basic with Ads plan will reach 12 countries: Brazil, Germany, Australia, Canada, Korea, Spain, United States, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom. In Brazil the plan arrives on November 3, with a monthly cost of R $ 18.90, while in the United States the value will be US $ 6.99 monthly (US $ 1 less than the plan with Disney + ads in the country. , and the same price as Hulu with ads there).

The arrival of the plan in early November is approaching the date unveiled in a rumor that emerged in early September, which indicated an anticipation of the launch of the advertising plan by Netflix, so much so as to arrive before the Disney + advertising plan.

The new plan will not affect existing ones and current subscribers who do not want the cheapest advertising experience will be able to continue with their existing plans: Basic (R $ 25.90 / month), Standard (R $ 39.90 / month) and Premium (R $ 55.90 / month).

While users of the Basic plan will not have to upgrade to the ad plan, Netflix announced a benefit for these users during the presentation: now, instead of the current resolution of 480p, the Basic plan will have an upgrade to 720p, with this resolution valid for both the ad- and ad-free plan.

Netflix also announced that average hourly ads will be 4 to 5 minutes, with each ad ranging from 15 to 30 seconds displayed at the beginning and during the content. The company claims it works to avoid the constant repetition of the same ads.

Although much of the catalog will be available for the new plan, initially a limited number of titles will not be available due to licensing restrictions.

According to Greg Peters, Netflix’s Chief Operating Officer who led the presentation, the company is working to reduce this number of titles not yet available which, according to him, today goes from 5 to 10% of the catalog, with this number ranging from country to country.

The plan with ads won’t allow users to download content, so it doesn’t exist in offline mode. This information had previously been hypothesized.

Opportunities for advertisers

Netflix also points out that the Basic plan with ads is an opportunity for advertisers to reach a diverse audience, which includes young people who no longer tend to watch traditional TV.

At launch, the ads will run for 15 to 30 seconds, shown before and during the series and movies. Advertisers will have country and genre targeting capabilities (e.g. action, drama, romance, science fiction). This will ensure that the ads are more relevant to customers and that the people they reach are relevant to advertisers.

Additionally, advertisers will also be able to prevent their ads from appearing on non-branded content (for example associated with sex scenes, nudity or explicit violence).

During the presentation, Netflix said it will not disclose the value of its ads at the moment, as this information remains between the company and advertisers. However, the company says nearly all of the initial announcements have already been sold in every country where the plan goes into effect next month.

The arrival of the basic advertising plan will come a few months after Netflix announced its idea of offering a more affordable, ad-funded plan. For this, the company has entered into a partnership with Microsoft.
