Dahmer on Netflix: the journalist condemns the inaccuracies of the series

After the release of Dahmer: Monster – The Story of Jeffrey Dahmer, many people who were present during the “Cannibal of Milwaukee” case have come out of silence. The last one is Ann E. Schwartz, a crime reporter covering the drama for the city’s paper in 1991. In the same year, he published a book about a murderer, The Man Who Couldn’t Kill Enough: The Milwaukee Murder Mysteries of Jeffrey Dahmer.

For British Daily independentThe reporter returns to the mini-series and points out its inaccuracies. “When people watch the show and say, “Oh my God, that’s terrible,” I want to tell them that it really wasn’t.“, he explains.

In his interviewHe recalls entering the criminal’s apartment:I was a crime reporter for five years, so I know the smell of buildings that contain decomposing bodies. This was not the case here. It was a chemical smell.”

The reporter also specifies that the neighbor, Glenda Cleveland, did not live in the same apartment as Jeffrey Dahmer, but in the opposite one. This information was already known. To portray the character of the neighbor, the creators of the series took inspiration from the real Glenda Cleveland and Pamela Bass, who actually lived near the killer.

Subsequently, Anne E. Schwartz also comments on the negative portrayal of the police on screen: “I spent a lot of time with them, meeting the people there. Again, this is an adaptation, but at that time it was not easy for the government to gain the trust of the population. This performance does not help matters.”

After the success of the series, the journalist says that the city of Milwaukee has turned away and does not want to hear the story anymore. In turn, Anne E. Schwartz published a reprint in 2021, again interviewing the same speakers.
