The movie “Rosaline” offers a modern interpretation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy as seen by Romeo’s ex Rosaline. The comedy is available on Disney+.
Revisiting classics to better modernize them is a recurring exercise in cinema. One of the most recent examples dates back to Dakota Johnson’s Persuasion, a Netflix film that reinvents the works of Jane Austen. In the same vein, Rosaline will land on Disney+.
The plot is simple: William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet– says Rosalin, who is none other than the heroine’s cousin and ex-girlfriend. Still under the spell, the renewed Capulet will do anything to win back the love of his life.
Far from the tragic tone of the original work and many subsequent adaptations, Rosaline opts for sharp, modern humor, using the codes of romantic comedy. In the lead role, Caitlin Dever – currently starring in Ticket to Heaven with Julia Roberts and George Clooney – shows the full extent of her comedic potential, and it works.
The film is an adaptation of Rebecca Searle’s book. when you were mine, but Scott Neustadter, the screenwriter of The Spectacular Now and The Fault in Our Stars , offers some nice verbal contests. Along with Caitlin Dever, the cast also features Isabella Merced, Kyle Allen, Sean Till, Minnie Driver and Bradley Whitford.
Rosaline is available on Disney+.
