Why did The Mummy reboot with Tom Cruise fail? Brendan Fraser knows it!

American actor Brendan Fraser, who starred in the fantasy saga “The Mummy” from 1999-2008, believes he knows why Tom Cruise’s reboot failed.

In 1999, Brendan Fraser became world famous as an adventurer Rick O’Connell in the fantasy film The Mummy. The actor would return to the role twice, in The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, but would not be part of the 2017 reboot adventure starring Tom Cruise.

The Mummy, directed by Tom Cruise, was a bitter failure, grossing only $80 million in the United States, compared to $155 million and $202 million for the first two installments of the franchise. In Interview given to the Variety siteBrendan Fraser thinks he knows why that version didn’t work.

“It’s hard to make a movie like this”– says Fraser. “An ingredient we had in making our Mummy that I didn’t see in this reboot was fun. That’s what was missing from this incarnation. It was a horror movie that was very frontal. The Mummy is supposed to be a thrill ride, but not scary or scary. I know It’s so hard to find the right tone. I tried it three times.”

Will Brendan Fraser be willing to find Rick O’Connell’s character for the new Mummy opus? “I don’t know how it can work”says the 53-year-old comedian. “But I’d be open to the possibility if someone comes up with the right idea.”

Brendan Fraser will host the event on February 22 with the release of the drama The Whale, directed by Darren Aronofsky. In this film, which caused a stir at the recent Venice Film Festival, the actor portrays a reticent, morbidly obese English teacher who tries to bond with his teenage daughter for his last chance at redemption.
