“The Rings of Power”: Sauron’s identity finally revealed

The first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” ended after Prime Video released the eighth episode in the early hours of Friday (14). And after much fan-created speculation, we finally learned of Sauron’s identity.

Probably no character has made an appearance as anticipated by fans as Shield Lord of Mordor. In “The Rings of Power”, Sauron is revealed only in the final episode of the season. At the time, he disguised himself as Hallbrand (Charlie Vickers).

The reveal might surprise many people or something others expect, as some fans were already betting on this disguise. This is because Hallbrand is a completely new character in JRR Tolkien’s universe, produced for the series journey. Furthermore, other factors were already showing signs: Hallbrand has great blacksmithing skills and displayed a violent spirit, issues that bound him to Sauron.

In “The Rings of Power,” Hallbrand made his first appearance in the second episode of the season, after rescuing Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) on the high seas. Since then, the character has proved enigmatic, claiming he escaped the Southern Lands after the orcs attack.

In the latest episode of “The Rings of Power”, Galadriel takes the “King of the Southern Lands” to Eregion, where he meets other elves such as Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and the master smith Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards). Afterwards, Hallbrand immediately shows interest in the project which seeks to use mithril to create a crown that will retain the elves’ light.

The crown project is an attempt to prevent the elves from disappearing entirely. In this context, Hallbrand praises Celebrimbor’s abilities and offers a supposed solution: the combination of the small amount of mithril with other minerals and, with that, the powers of the artifact would be amplified.

After an encounter between the elves, Galadriel is suspicious of Celebrimbor’s description of the crown, when the blacksmith claims that the artifact would grant the power of the Unseen World. This phrase was used earlier in “The Rings of Power” by Adar (Joseph Mawle), who used these words to describe Sauron’s actions after the fall of Morgoth.

That said, Galadriel puts the pieces together and discovers that Hallbrand is Sauron. In the clash between the two characters, the Lord of the Shield reveals that he stole the king’s symbol from a dead man and indicates that Galadriel was responsible for bringing him to Middle-earth and introducing him to Celebrimbor.

In this way, “The Rings of Power” ends its first season with a giant revelation and leaving many arcs open for the later stages of the series. Filming for the second season has already begun, but a release date has not yet been set.
