The penultimate episode of “House of the Dragon” premiered this Sunday (16), with the Greens consummating a long-planned coup, following the aftermath of the events of Episode 8. Thus, the series sets the stage for the final episode of the season. .
After the dramatic death of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine), episode 9 brought the behind-the-scenes plots of King’s Landing to the fore, with plans kept hidden for years by the Greens (see the split between Greens and Blacks in “The house of the dragon” here), finally put into practice.
The series sought to prove that King Viserys’s death was different from that of other monarchs, with a gigantic secret from the conspirators, which included the arrest of the castle’s servants. Queen Alicent is convinced that her husband wanted to see her son Aegon on the Iron Throne. This is based on hallucinations whispered by the king in his last breaths, with no witnesses other than the queen herself.
But even when Alicent begins to ally with her father to bring Aegon to the throne, they disagree on what should be done with Rhaenyra and her children. Although she has agreed to usurp the succession to the throne, the queen does not want the blood of her former friend and daughter of her dead husband to be shed. On the other hand, Otto Hightower says there is no other way out.
A relentless search for the missing Aegon also shows the division, at least momentarily, within the Greens. Alicent sends Ser Criston Cole and his other son, Aemond, in search of the future king, while Otto Hightower sends the twins Arryk and Erryk Cargyll in search of his grandson.
Eventually, with the help of the mysterious White Worm, who asks Otto for a promise, Aegon is found. The fact is, he had no interest in ascending the throne. His feeling of rejection of his father, his mother’s lack of affection, plus everything that has already been shown about Aegon, are elements that could indicate that we will have a Joffrey-style king in the future.
The episode has moments as intriguing and amusing, mainly in Aegon’s search, and as terrifying as a death in the Little Council, which follows the meeting as if nothing had happened; and the interaction between Larys and Alicent, which shows that the price for the loyalty of the current Lord Strong is higher than we thought.
However, it all leads to a final moment: Aegon’s coronation in the Dragon Pit, with the people of King’s Landing forced to arrive there to witness the moment and legitimize the ceremony. Rhaenys is suddenly present at the event and makes a beautiful appearance. However, I can’t see how consistent the decision of the “Queen who never was” is in the end.
It is likely that the last episode will bring more of Rhaenyra, who was left out in this one, unaware of the blow right after the toasts of the previous episode, where Alicent claimed that Princess Targaryen would be a good queen.
One can imagine that, on the other side of this story, the Blacks will start organizing in the next episode to put Rhaenyra on the throne, and that the civil war between the Targaryens must begin.
Several moments must have reminded “Game of Thrones” fans of the series. Aegon’s searches in the styes of King’s Landing are some of those moments, but above all the crowd that takes Rhaenys away from her protector, with the noblewoman among the people without them noticing.
Episode 9 of “House of the Dragon” is available on HBO Max, as are all previous episodes. The final episode of the season arrives next Sunday (11pm), at 10pm, on HBO and HBO Max.
