He died in his native village of Santa Fe de la Laguna, near the tourist destination of Lake Patzcuaro, where the traditional Day of the Dead is celebrated.
The announcement was made by Roberto Monroy, the secretary of tourism of Michoacán, the state he was from:
“I am deeply saddened by the death of Doña María Salud Ramirez Caballero, the inspiration behind Mama Coco, a tireless woman and an example of life, this adorable character who traveled the world.” he wrote on his Twitter.
