With the revelation that Halbrand is actually the Dark Lord Sauron, actor Charlie Vickers has said that initially he didn’t know he was playing the iconic villain.
Talking with Entertainment WeeklyVickers admitted that the showrunners, JD Payne and Patrick McKay hadn’t told him he’d be playing that character until the third episode.
“Boys [Payne y McKay] They sat me down right before we started shooting the third episode and they said, ‘There’s something else you don’t know. You’re playing Sauron.’”
Despite not being tipped off, the actor suspected after the audition process that his role could lead to something bigger.
“They [los showrunners] They asked me to do a monologue for ‘Ricardo III’ and one for ‘Paradise Lost’,” Vickers commented. “So while doing those lines, I got the impression that this character would have some sort of dark arc.“
Vickers, who had already appeared in ‘Medici’, said that he had managed to keep the big news a secret in the setwith a single exception.
“no one knew [excepto] Morfydd (Clark), but only because she was my scene partner,“Declared the actor. “There’s something interesting going on with Halbrand. He is only seen through the eyes of other characters. The others play a very important role in creating how the audience sees him and how the audience sees Sauron.”
Vickers, who will reprise his role in the second season of ‘The Rings of Power’, one of the best fantasy series on Amazon Prime Video, provided his own impression of the villain, commenting on Halbrand’s journey of redemption: “It’s interesting because Tolkien talks about Sauron as if he was repentant. He makes it quite clear that he feels remorse and is ashamed,Vickers asserted.I believe that fear can lead to genuine repentance and I believe that he fears the Gods and that he fears their punishment..”
