“House of the Dragon”: Why didn’t Rhaenys say “dracarys”? The actress and director explain

The penultimate episode of “House of the Dragon” arrived this Sunday (16), setting the stage for the final episode of the season, but the final scene left many people wondering: why didn’t Rhaenys say “dracarys”? Actress Eve Best and episode writer Sara Hess tried to explain.

Although “House of the Dragon” and the entire “Game of Thrones” universe are known for its excessive brutality, it was the absence of such brutality that attracted attention – and angered – many fans of the series.

After Ser Erryk helps Rhaenys (Eve Best) escape the Red Keep, where Alicent Hightower holds “The Queen Who Never Was” captive until she swears allegiance to Aegon, she is dragged by the crowd to the Dragon Pit, where she is crowned new. king, now Aegon II.

Rhaenys, therefore, finds there an opportunity to do what he has always wanted and Ser Erryk would not allow him: to save his dragon named Meleys. As the people of King’s Landing greet the new king, Rhaenys literally emerges from the ground, fulfilling the prophecy proclaimed by Helaena that “there is a wild beast under the boards”.

The explosive entrance of Meleys and Rhaenys to Aegon II’s coronation is followed by a moment when the dragon and the knight make their way to the place where Alicent, Aegon, Aemond, Otto are located … Rhaenys simply shouts “dracarys “to his dragon, the word established in the series as the High Valyrian order for dragons to set fire.

But instead of “barbecuing” her relatives, Rhaenys orders Meleys to “roar”, scaring the Greens but preventing their death. Rhaenys turns and runs off with Meleys, and lets this “opportunity” pass, stating only one thing with this act: she is on Rhaenyra’s side in this fight.

when requested by The Hollywood reporter on the reason for Rhaenys ‘choice to scare only the Greens rather than kill them, and consequently prevent the impending civil war within the Targaryens, the writer of the episode Sara Hess explained Rhaenys’ decision.

“I think he can’t do it. It is not her war. The struggle is between these two sides and she has nothing to do with it. She doesn’t feel like she’s the one who should come in and do this. But you are right. If she had incinerated everyone, the game is over, Rhaenyra wins and here we are done. But the cost is huge. I also feel that in that moment she looks Alicent in her eyes and Alicent walks in front of her son to protect him. It is from one mother to another. Rhaenys is angry, but in the previous scene with Alicent he respected her, even though he disagrees with her. So she won’t kill another woman like that. “

“We talked to Eve Best about it and in the previous scene she felt like Alicent had seen Rhaenys for the first time in a long time,” added director Clare Kilner. “At that moment, they are mothers in this terrible world created by men and she can’t do that.”

Eve Best herself, who plays Rhaenys in the series, told her impressions to the Weekly entertainment. “It is the moment when the greatest possible ruler shows up. It’s the most outrageous and explosive action of the season [mas] it is also the most merciful and kind act because he is very intelligent and chooses to do the right thing. It is something that is truly a moment of forgiveness, but also a moment of love, in a weird way. She has all the ammunition and all the desire for revenge … she has suffered so many losses for herself and for so many others. The desire not to destroy becomes even stronger and this is the sign of greatness. [É] a truly stimulating moment “.

The final episode of the first season of “House of the Dragon” will premiere next Sunday (11pm) at 10pm, on HBO and HBO Max.
