The Godfather is a classic gangster film at the same time as a family tragedy, skillfully directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The feature film won 3 Oscars, Best Actor for Marlon Brando, Best Adapted Screenplay for Mario Puzo (author of the adapted book) and Coppola, and Best Picture, produced by Albert S. Rudy tapped for Paramount.
The action of The Godfather takes place in 1945, at a time when the city of New York is under the control of five mafia families. One of them, the Corleones, is led by the “Godfather” Don Vito Corleone. Sollozzo, head of Tatalia’s family, suggests that Don Vito start a drug trade, except the patriarch doesn’t see it that way.
Sonny Corleone, Vito’s son, meanwhile, is genuinely interested in expanding the family business. Sollozzo decides to kill Vito so that he is free to deal with Sonny. The attack fails, and Michael, Sonny’s younger brother, who did not want to join the mafia, sets out to find the culprits and execute them.
The Godfather is one of the rare examples of a feature film that the producer asked the director to extend rather than shorten. Then, on impulse from the producer, 2h06 of the first cut was found, with about 50 extra minutes, bringing the film to its final length of 2h55.
