First reviews of ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio’

It seems that he has turned the popular wooden character into gold.

The 82 years of ‘Pinocchio’, Disney’s darkest classic, do not matter. In fact, the character has recently resurfaced with films like the Italian ‘Pinocchio’, which featured Roberto Benigni in the role of Gepetto, and this year with a proposal directed by Robert Zemeckis (sorry, his ‘Pinocchio’ is a bit far of the 15 best films by the director of ‘Back to the Future’) and with the magnificent Tom Hanks in the role of Guess? yes, Geppetto.

Before we start talking in depth about the 30 most anticipated movies of 2023, 2022 still has a few titles left to contend with, like ‘Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro’which has gone beyond the images and the new trailer and is already presenting its firm candidacy as one of the best movies of 2022.

A few lucky ones have had the privilege of being able to see the film of William delToro, a project that has been developing since 2008and that Netflix will finally premiere the next November 25.

The critic Rafael Motamayor, from ‘indiewire’ensures “to adore” this new vision of the character in charge of Guillermo del Toro:

Additionally, in his review, he notes how “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio reimagines the classic fantasy tale through the most beautifully done stop-motion animation in years.” He describes it as “a powerful and vital father-son story of acceptance and love in the face of pain, misery and fascism, as well as the filmmaker’s love of monsters in what is easily his best film in a decade”.

For his part, the publisher of ‘Deadlines’ Damon Wise concludes that “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is very different from Disney’s 1940 animated film (…), but its director takes a macabre approach to the fact that the main character, a wooden puppet blessed with life I longed to be a real human child.”

Leslie Felperin of ‘The Hollywood Reporter’stresses the fact that “There are many inventions originals on the del Toro and McHale script that are effective, powerful and bright“.

Finally, the critic ‘Variety’ Guy Lodge says the film is “spiritually closest to the sense of the grotesque the original work of Carlo Collodi“:

And, he adds, “the film takes place over two never-dull hours, it’s a rare kid’s entertainment that isn’t afraid to baffle kids as much as it charms them.”
