Netflix released the movie “The Stranger” (The Stranger, in the original) on its platform last Wednesday (19) and so far the film has received rave reviews. The crime drama directed by Thomas M. Wright earned a 96% approval rating on the review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes.
The plot of “The Unknown” follows an unusual relationship that forms between Mark, an undercover cop, and Henry, a murder suspect. The agent wants to gain the man’s trust by looking for a confession to the crime. The bond between the characters becomes a great comfort for both, but the hidden secrets are revealed over time.
The Netflix movie is lightly based on real events. The story of the drama was inspired by the book “The Sting: The Undercover Operation That Caught Daniel Morcombe’s Killer”, by author Kate Kyriacou. In turn, the literary work is based on the investigation into the death of young Daniel Morcombe in 2003, in the state of Queensland, Australia.
Subsequently, the young man would not be found until August 2011, when his remains were found near 510 Kings Road, Glass House Mountains in Queensland. Suspect Brett Peter Cowan was eventually caught in a sting operation and convicted after confessing to Morcombe’s murder.
The critic Paul Byrnes of the Sydney Gerald’s morning, highlighted praise for the Netflix movie. “In tone, the film is brilliantly hidden. It takes a long time to find out what’s going on. The atmosphere is dark, suspicious, brutal in language, with an upbeat soundscape and music, “she said.
On the other hand, not all reviews have been positive. Hannah Strong, from Little white liesshe praised the Netflix movie’s visuals and intense aesthetic ensemble, but for her, “the complicated plot is held back in a way that makes it difficult to truly connect to the story, however worthy of the subject.”
“O Desconhecido” currently ranks second in Netflix’s Top 10 in Brazil in terms of movies. The cast of the film includes Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Jada Alberts, Steve Mouzakis, Cormac Wright and Matthew Sunderland.
