“I can only deal with one universe, I can’t deal with a multiple universe.”
Tim Burton acknowledges that he has no plans to create anything within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As collected by Deadline, the renowned director, 64, spoke about the future of his film career last Saturday during a press conference at the Lumière Festival in Lyon, France.
Burton, who is known for his work on famous fantasy and horror hits such as ‘Beetlejuice’ and ‘Corpse Bride,’ spoke about his long-standing working relationship with Disney, where he began his career as an animation artist.
Noting that the studio’s main focuses right now are on the Marvel, Star Wars and Pixar franchises that Disney owns, Burton said: “It has become very homogenized, very consolidated. There is less space for different types of things“When asked if he would ever consider directing a Marvel movie, Burton said no.”I can only deal with one universe, I can’t deal with a multiple universe“, he explained.
The filmmaker detailed to event attendees that Disney had “hired and fired” him multiple times, and that he likely wouldn’t be working with them again anytime soon, given the experience he had making the film’s live-action reimagining. Dumbo’, released in 2019.
“My story is that I started there. I was hired and fired several times throughout my career there“he stated. “The thing about Dumbo is I think my Disney days are over,” Burton continued. “I realized that I was Dumbo, that I was working in this big horrible circus and I needed to escape. And then Burton added, “That movie is pretty autobiographical on a certain level.”
Burton was honored with the Prix Lumière award at the festival on Friday, in a ceremony that he told Deadline “reinvigorated” his love of cinema. Past winners of the Prix Lumière include Clint Eastwood, Martin Scorsese and Jane Campion, among others. “That’s why this festival is so great because it’s purely about cinema, rather than business or awards or anything else,” Burton stated.
As for Tim Burton’s next works, we will soon see one of the works directed to the small screen. The director is now one of the creators of ‘Wednesday’, the next Netflix series, centered on the daughter of the Addams family. In it, the student years of the young woman will be seen, and how she relates to her relatives while she learns to control her psychic powers.
That for television. When it comes to the big screen, the director is immersed in the second part of ‘Beetlejuice’a project that will be carried out by Plan B, Brad Pitt’s production company.
