Rihanna, Dave Chappelle and Tyler Perry among the guests at a special screening of ‘Towards Freedom’, the return of Will Smith after the Oscar cake.
We don’t know if ‘Towards Freedom’, Antoine Fuqua’s new film, will manage to become one of Will Smith’s best films but, to begin to calm the controversy after the actor’s slap at the last Oscar ceremony, on Apple TV + they have made an exclusive pass to some exceptional guests with the mission of starting to clean the networks for its premiere.
“Epic night!” Will Smith shares this image with Dave Chappelle, Blacksmith, Rihanna, Kenya Barris, Tyler Perry and ASAP Rocky. “Thanks for coming to see #Emancipation. I hope you enjoyed it.”
‘Towards Freedom’ stars Smith in the role of a runaway slave who becomes known as “Whipped Peter” after photographs of keloid scars on his back are distributed to show the brutality of slavery. The film follows Smith as he navigates the Louisiana swamps to escape plantation owners who nearly killed him.
“‘Towards Freedom’ still haunts me,” Perry wrote on her Instagram. “It’s really powerful, moving and captivating. And the subsequent conversation with this group was legendary. Thanks, Will Smith, for the preview.”
“‘Towards Freedom’ is true art, power and everything a movie should be,” explains Kenya Barris.
Recall that at the recent Oscars, Chris Rock appeared onstage to present an award and, spotting Jada Pinkett Smith, joked, “Jada, I can’t wait to see ‘Lieutenant O’Neil 2’.” At first, Will was seen laughing and his wife pouting. The camera turned back to Rock, and then Smith came onstage, slapped the comedian in the face, and returned to his seat. “Get my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth,” he already shouted from his seat on two occasions. “Man, it was just a joke from ‘Lieutenant O’Neil,'” replied a stunned Rock, who, as he could, continued his segment of the ceremony.
Shortly after, Smith won the Oscar, gave one of the most embarrassing speeches in living memory and, the next day, the Academy decided to ban him from the awards for the next ten years.
‘Towards Freedom’, written by Bill Collage (‘The Divergent Series: Allegiant’, ‘Assassin’s Creed’), has been directed by Antoine Fuqua, the genius who conquered us in video stores thanks to ‘Replacement Assassins’ (1998) and that has managed to give us the occasional gem such as ‘Training Day’ (2001), ‘The Equalizer 2’ (2018).
‘Towards Freedom’ has a release date in North American theaters December 2 and will be available to stream worldwide on Apple TV+ starting December 9.
