On the occasion of the premiere of ‘L’Immensità’, the actress reflects on sexist violence.
After the success of the harrowing ‘En los margines’, Juan Diego Botto’s debut feature, Penelope Cruz travel to the Rome of the 70s with ‘L’Immensità’, the very personal new film by Emanuele Crialese that hits theaters today. The actress gets into the skin of Clara, a woman in the midst of a marital crisis who finds refuge in her daughter Adriana de Ella, who rejects her identity and wants to convince everyone that she is a boy. “The issue of transsexuality in children and adolescents has advanced in the last ten years. However, in terms of domestic violence we remain the same. I even have a feeling it’s getting worse. There are so many stories of women who find it hard to ask for help and when they do, they don’t get the protection they need. There is no real protection for them. And you hear terrible stories that happen even in front of children”Penelope tells us.
A relationship of survival is created between Clara, the character played by the actress, and her daughter, played by Filippo Pucillo, because “they both live in a prison and that is precisely where they connect. That’s why Clara hides under the table, she goes down to the children’s world because she feels safe there”.
To the rhythm of Raffaella Carrà
Crialese, true to his poetic style, has included several musical numbers to the rhythm of Carrà in the film. “I had always been a big fan of Raffaella. When I was little, my grandmother always took me to the park so that I could sing her songs for her neighbors. We were never able to show her the film or invite her to the shoot. The day she passed away we were preparing the musical number from the beginning, ‘Rumore’. The producer came in and told us.”
Regarding the work with the three children, Penélope recognizes that the delicacy with which Emanuele directs was fundamental. She “she made sure that we had some time before shooting to create real relationships and that they felt comfortable with me. I really appreciate that children are taken care of on filming.”
