Rihanna’s ‘Lift Me Up’ is not the only great song that the long-awaited sequel to ‘Black Panther’ has already taught us.
As we prepare to welcome ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ in November, and are getting ready, Hollywood Records and Marvel Music have gifted us with four tracks from the film’s soundtrack. Yep, that includes Tems’ spectacular version of the Marvel Comic-Con teaser and Rihanna’s first song in over six years.
As the real world mourns the death of Black Panther actor Chadwick Boseman, so does the nation of Wakanda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Early reviews of the film, following its Hollywood premiere last Wednesday, praised the respect and honor “Wakanda Forever” showed Boseman’s legacy, with many critics also citing the power of the film’s music. Along with a cover of Bob Marley’s “No Woman, No Cry” by Nigerian artist Tems, the upcoming soundtrack also features Rihanna’s new power ballad “Lift Me Up.” The song is a moving tribute to Boseman, co-written by Tems, director Ryan Coogler, and composer Ludwig Göransson. “After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the movie and song, I wanted to write something that portrayed a warm hug from all the people I’ve lost in my life,” Tems explained in a press release for the new single. . . “I tried to imagine how I would feel if I could sing to you now and express how much I miss you. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me, so hearing her stream this song is such an honor.”
Two other songs from the upcoming film’s soundtrack, “A Body, A Coffin,” by Amaarae and “Soy” by the Santa Fe Klan, were also released. Unlike the tracks by Tems and Rihanna, the two additional songs feature more upbeat sounds; “A Body, A Coffin” soars with a body-shaking Afrobeat style, while “Soy,” a Spanish-language rap, is hard-hitting.
2018’s ‘Black Panther’ soundtrack was curated by Kendrick Lamar and featured the likes of SZA, Travis Scott and The Weeknd. And ‘Black Panther: The Album’ trended immediately when it was released, with more than eight songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart just over a week after the film’s release. The album also won two Grammy Awards, one for Score and the second for Best Rap Performance for “King’s Dead” by Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, Future and James Blake.
Kendrick Lamar received widespread praise for the film’s soundtrack at the time. Although it has not been revealed so far how involved Lamar will be in the new soundtrack, if at all, the upcoming collection will still be produced by Oscar-, Emmy- and Grammy-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, who also fronted the previous set.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be released on November 11. Meanwhile, she listens to her hits below.
