Imelda Staunton Reveals What It Was Like Playing Queen Elizabeth II After Her Death

The image of Queen Elizabeth II in the fifth season of the Netflix series The Crown was embodied by the 66-year-old British actress Imelda Staunton, best known for her role as Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter. Recall that Elizabeth herself died in early September – just at that time the final stage of production of new series was going on, which, out of respect for the royal family, had to be suspended for the duration of mourning.

In a dialogue with journalists from Stellar, Staunton admitted that against the backdrop of the death of the monarch, this role has become a “terrifying prospect” for her. However, despite the difficulties, the actress called the work in the “Crown” a great experience.

But the production was so big and these people are interesting and complex,” she said.

Also in an interview with Stellar, the actress responded to criticism from viewers who accuse the series of implausibility.

We all try to take a very truthful line, and the challenge of playing people who are basically limited by their lives, their duty, and their relationships is a big acting challenge in some cases,” she said. “So it was a privilege to try to maintain the standards of the previous four seasons.

Speaking on Radio Times the other day, she also recalled her feelings after the news of the Queen’s death.

That night I was inconsolable. And I was very glad that I didn’t have to work the next day. How would they film me with that expression on my face?

The fifth season of The Crown will premiere on Netflix on November 9th. In new episodes to viewers will show the darkest episodes from the life of the royal family. The story begins in 1992, when Charles and Diana officially broke up (they divorced only 5 years later), and will end with the tragic death of the princess in the Paris tunnel in 1997. The first official footage and posters with the new actors of the series have already appeared on the network.

A couple of weeks ago, the key players Imelda Staunton, Elizabeth Debicki and Dominic West gave a big interview Entertainment Weekly and talked in more detail about what awaits us in the new season.
