What are you talking about?

TOP-FLIGHT ADAPTATION

Before creating emotions – this is the least we can say – the Painted Bird filled many libraries during its official selection for the 2019 Venice Film Festival. Written by Jerzy Kosinski and published in 1965, L’Oiseau motley got a new skin almost 65 years later, thanks to Czech director Vaclav Marhul. This is not the first time Jerzy Kosinski’s work has been adapted for cinema, as we were able to discover another of his classics, Mr. Chance, with Peter Sellers and Shirley McLain, on the big screen in 1979.

The real challenge is taken by the “Drawn Bird that Marries” narrative, the initiator of the war drama, the film director offers a spectacular cinematic experience that often echoes the classic requiem for the massacre in terms of its subject matter and its treatment. With its sometimes crude, often shocking black-and-white images of shocking images, the film unfolds with rare poetry, and this, despite the violence of his words, clearly echoes the tragic news of Ukraine.

Focused on the odyssey of this little boy, surrounded by increasingly vivid and pervasive violence, the feature film is shot with the talent of the young Peter Kotlar (Joska). He also relies on well-known faces for moviegoers like Stellan Skarsgდიrd or Harvey Keitel.

For 3 hours, rich in brilliant staging and symbolic and astonishing images, the film manages to establish itself and indelibly imprint it in our memory. No wonder he received, by the way, the UNICEF Prize at the Venice Film Festival 2019 and at least 7 Czech Lions (including Best Picture and Best Director).
