The horror film “Aterrorizante 2” (“Terrifier 2”, in English) has not yet arrived in Brazilian cinemas, but it had its US premiere in October and caused surprises for its good performance at the box office.
Writer-director Damien Leone’s bloody sequel to his 2016 killer clown cult hit shocked the industry by grossing more than expected and has already racked up over $10 million at the box office. Though the value seems low compared to blockbusters, “Terrifying 2” is an independent film with a budget of US$250,000 and very little investment in promotion.
But, in the end, what is generating interest in “Scary 2”? It might have something to do with all the reports that the horror movie made multiple moviegoers walk out of the theater, pass out, or vomit midway through the film.
Photos of wheelchair-bound moviegoers receiving medical treatment outside a screening of ‘Scary 2’ have gone viral on social media, turning the bloody sequence into something of an endurance test for horror movie fans. The reason for the vomiting and fainting is reportedly the explicit violence present in the feature film, amplified by the good quality and execution of the scenes.
“Look, I’d love to do some releases, I think it’s kind of a badge of honor because it’s an intense film,” Damien Leone recently said. Entertainment Weekly on the reaction to the film. “I don’t want people to pass out, get hurt during the movie. But it’s surreal.”
He continued, explaining that audiences should be prepared for this: “Here’s the thing, it’s called ‘Scary 2.’ You should probably see “Terrifying 1” before moving on to this. If you see “Terrifying 1,” you’ll know what you’re getting yourself into. There’s a now infamous murder scene, a saw scene, in Part I that everyone is talking about,” Leone said.
“We try to rival that scene [no novo filme] because the really supportive fan base that we’ve had all this time, really started to grow [o vilão Art the Clown] on a pedestal, I mean, those are the things they really want. I think this movie is more accessible, but essentially we’re still making these movies for them, and if other people want to participate, the more the merrier.”
There are reports that ‘Scary 2’ ends on a cliffhanger, meaning Leone is expected to return to theaters in the future with a third installment in his bloody horror film series.
The film opens in theaters in Brazil on December 29.
