Prince Philip, who was married to Queen Elizabeth, has considered suing Netflix. The reason: the way his life was depicted in an episode of the popular series “The Crown”, which shows the life of the British royal family.
The King Consort died in 2021 at the age of 99, but shortly before he had also discussed the possibility of suing Netflix. This came after an episode of the series hinted that he was responsible for the death of his sister, Princess Cecilia of Greece and Denmark, who died in a plane crash in 1937.
In the series version “The Crown”, in an episode called “Paterfamilias”, a young Philip, then 16, is forbidden from spending his holidays in Germany with his sister Cecília due to behavior problems at school. The princess, who was pregnant with her at the time, said she was going to fly to London to attend a wedding to visit her brother, but she ended up dying when the plane crashed.
“I’m surprised he dared show up here. If it wasn’t for Philip and his indiscipline, she would never have gotten on that plane,” said Prince Andrew of Denmark and Greece, father of Philip and Cecilia, in the series. “It’s true, isn’t it, boy? You’re the reason I’m burying my favorite daughter. Get out of here,” she concluded.
For Prince Philip, this representation was not faithful to the facts and he blamed his sister’s death on him. People close to Philip say the King consort of England was very uneasy about the episode and would have spoken to the royal family’s legal advisers about what could be done. In the end he decided to do nothing, following his wife Elizabeth’s mantra “never complain, never explain.”
Philip wasn’t the only member of the royal family to be annoyed by the Netflix series: Prince William, the current heir to the throne, has also allegedly stated that the drama series would damage the image of the British royals.
