Disney will return to Genoa with “The Princess Diaries 3”

“The Princess Diaries 3,” a continuation of the film series starring Anne Hathaway, is in development at Disney. Initial information points out that the new film will be a sequel, not a reboot of Princess Mia’s beloved story.

According to exclusive information from the The Hollywood Reporter, Aadrita Mukerji is writing a script for ‘The Princess Diaries 3’. As of now, Anne Hathaway still has no contract to return for the third film.

However, the actress has already publicly stated that she supports a third film and is expected to return if this potential film moves beyond the script stage at Disney. In a recent conversation with the Entertainment todaythe actress has declared that she will not think only of a return to Genoa, but whatever happens.

“I’m rooting for this,” Hathaway told ET in late October of this year. “If there’s a way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we’d make it work. We’d go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and make that happen.

In 2001, Anne Hathaway starred in “The Princess Diaries”, where there lived an American teenager who discovers that she is the heir to the throne of the European kingdom of Genoa. The story of Mia Thermopolis and her grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi, played by Julie Andrews, is based on the book series by Meg Cabot.

The film became a box office hit at the time, earning $165.3 million globally. Three years later, the actresses would return in “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”, a 2004 film that also achieved good numbers, with a total gross of 134.7 million dollars at the worldwide box office. Garry Marshall, director who passed away in 2016, directed the first two features.

The new film will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who produced the first two films in the series. The executive production is signed by screenwriter Melissa Stack. The screenplay, which is under development, will be penned by Mukerji. No word yet on who will direct the new film.

The first two “The Princess Diaries” are available on Disney+.
