‘Quantum of Solace’, one of the ‘James Bond’ films, almost eliminated ‘M’, played by Judi Dench, instead of waiting for her death in ‘Skyfall’.
Directed by Marc Foster, the sequel to ‘Casino Royale’ was released 14 years ago and followed Daniel Craig’s 007 in his fight against Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), who wanted to destroy Bolivia’s natural reserves.
Talking with The Hollywood Reporterthe co-writer Neal Purvis revealed that the original plans for ‘M’ in the film were modified after a first draft.
“[Matar a M] It was a fact, when we started ‘Quantum of Solace’,Purvis shared.
“I wouldn’t say it was a throwaway scene or anything like that, because it was exciting – but it was kind of sudden that it happened halfway (or 3/4) through the first draft of the movie.“
They decided that if ‘M’ was going to die (for the first time in Bond film history), it had to be some way.”appropriate“, assured the scriptwriter. “With an emotional depth that this movie didn’t seem to have time, or space, to develop,“
To this he added: “We wrote the scene but luckily it was cut.”
Finally, Dench’s last appearance in the skin of the head of MI6 occurred 5 years later.
During the spectacular and climactic gunfight that occurs in ‘Skyfall’, one of Raoul Silva’s followers manages to wound her, and despite fighting, ‘M’ dies in Bond’s arms. Gareth Mallory (Ralph Fiennes) is positioned as his successor.
On the other hand, Craig – who revoked his license to kill last year – had shared his opinion on ‘Quantum of Solace’, saying only that the film “worked a bit“.
“It’s not ‘Casino Royale’… It was literally the feeling that ‘second parts were never good’. Somehow, we couldn’t get over ‘Casino’,said the actor.
All the films in the ‘James Bond’ saga are available on Amazon Prime Video.
