Anthony Hopkins stars in this exclusive clip from ‘Armageddon Time’the new film by James Gray, a deeply personal coming-of-age story about the strength of a family and the generational ambition to pursue the American dream that, in addition, features performances by Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Michael Banks Repeta.
“When you’ve been to the edge of the solar system, what do you have left?“James Gray told us funny in full promo of ‘ad astra‘ in 2019. “I don’t know, I have to find something, it’s my job, I’m not going to leave it. I might go to prehistoric times, what do you think?”
In the end it seems that it has not gone that far back and in ‘Armageddon Time’, with a theatrical release date this November 18will recount the memories of his education in the eighties in the district of Queens, New York, more specifically about his time at the Kew-Forest School, a private institution that counts, among others, Donald Trump among its former students.
“I have tried to make the most intimate and transparent film that I could“, explains the filmmaker. “I wanted to free the story from the shackles of its genre and remove any barriers that might stand in the way of sincerity. First and foremost, he wanted to be genuine. I remember writing four words on a piece of cardboard and taping it to my camera as a constant reminder: “Love. warmth. Humor. Loss”. Y, with this film, loss takes many different forms“.
At Kew-Forest, Gray met kids whose sporadic use of the word “black” was nothing more than an expression of their prejudices. That disturbed him, but not enough to raise his voice. In this clip we see his memories of that and how he managed to talk about it with the person he loved the most and trusted the most: his maternal grandfather, a guy of English origin, enormously warm and generous, who unconditionally supported Gray’s passion for art and his dreams for the future.
Throughout his grandson’s childhood, he always tried to instill in him an understanding of what was right and wrong, and at that time, he spoke openly about the harsh reality of the world and the moral imperative not to remain silent. This relationship, so central to Gray’s creative life and moral compass, would become a central pillar of ‘Armageddon Time’.
“My grandfather encouraged me to do what was difficult and uncomfortable. And to always look inside myself,” he recalls. “I realize that not everyone has such a wise or compassionate figure to help them establish a moral compass, but It makes me happy to know that his wisdom will live on, in a way, in this film.“.
James Gray has had the critics on his side since he won the Silver Lion in Venice in 1994, at just 25 years of age. for the direction of ‘Cuestión de sangre (Little Odessa)’ (1994), his film debut, but this new title will force him to return to a New York that he already recreated in ‘The night is ours’ (2007), one of the best gangster movies of the 2000s, after going deep into the jungle in ‘Z. The lost city’ (2016) and travel into space with ‘Ad Astra’ (2019).
