Brendan Fraser wouldn’t go to 2023 Golden Globes if nominated: his reason is very important

‘The Whale’ is yet to hit theaters and is already getting rave reviews from Brendan Fraser. Her performance in this film even earned her a 6-minute standing ovation at the Venice International Film Festival in early September 2022.

There has even been much speculation that for this film, in which he tries to fight lipophobia, the actor will receive his first Oscar nomination.

Even though the most important film award is still months away, the actor of ‘The Mummy’ (film available on ViX+, ViX’s premium streaming service) is clear that he would not stop at one award.

Brendan Fraser says he won’t go to Golden Globes 2023 if nominated for ‘The Whale’

In the first few months of the year there is what is commonly known as awards season, the delivery of multiple awards of greater or lesser prestige until we get to the Oscars.

Generally, those who win statuettes at the first events usually claim a statuette from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

One of the mandatory stops on the runway is the Golden Globes, hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

These would be the only awards that Brendan Fraser would refuse to go to, despite how award-winning his performance in ‘The Whale’ is expected to be.

This is how the actor expressed it to GQ magazine in an interview published on November 16, 2022:

“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I have respect for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (…) And my mother was not raised a hypocrite. You can call me many things, but not that.

But what was the actor referring to with his statements?

The reason Brendan Fraser wouldn’t be going to the 2023 Golden Globes

In March 2018, the 53-year-old artist revealed to the aforementioned magazine that he was sexually harassed by Philip Berk, president and member of the HFPA. The event took place in 2003, at a business lunch:

“His left hand reaches out, grabs my butt, and one of his fingers touches my anus. And start moving it.”

This experience also led him to withdraw from major productions and was one of the reasons Brendan Fraser left films for so many years.

In his most recent interview, the actor commented that, after his public complaint, the organization responsible for the Golden Globes issued a statement blaming the harassment and launched a private investigation into it, however, over time, the HFPA proposed to launch a joint declaration ensuring that:

“While Mr Burke was found to have touched Mr Fraser inappropriately, the evidence points to the fact that it was intended as a joke rather than a sexual advance.”

Additionally, Philip Berk did not lose his vote or face any kind of disciplinary action from the organization.
