Investigations found traces of explosives in the pipes
The Swedish public prosecutor’s office released this Friday (18) the results of the preliminary investigation carried out on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines and stressed that there was “serious sabotage” in the pipelines of the system. Four major leaks were noted at the facility in the Baltic Sea on 26 September.
βDuring the crime scene investigation conducted in the Baltic Sea, a lot of debris was collected and the area was thoroughly analyzed. The analyzes carried out show traces of explosives on various foreign objects found. Advanced analysis work continues to bring conclusions more reliable on the incident,” Attorney General Mats Ljungqvist said in a statement.
The head of the investigation also underlined that “the collaboration between the Swedish authorities and those of other countries is excellent” and that it is important to “continue to work calmly” to ascertain the causes. Ljungqvist stressed that the investigations are “quite complex” and therefore it is not clear whether anyone will be charged with a crime.
Western countries accuse Russia of being responsible for the sabotage of gas pipelines, the most important for transporting natural gas from Russian territory to European countries. Since sanctions against Moscow began to be imposed over the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin has used the gas issue as a way to pressure Europe to review the sanctions.
In turn, Russia has even accused the UK of being behind the matter, saying the country’s ships were in the area before the blasts.
In his daily interview with reporters this Friday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked about the preliminary findings of the Swedes and said that “it is very important to establish who is behind the explosions.”
The four explosions were registered in the exclusive economic areas of Sweden and Denmark, two on each side. The leaks have affected the supply and the repair has not yet been completed. π§π·
