‘Andor 1×11’: The Luthen theory that obsesses fans does not make sense

No, Luthen is not a Jedi, as a fan theory defends, now fed back by a small detail from episode 11, Ferrix’s daughter. Please, don’t let the slime get to the best Star Wars product in decades.

Is the character of Luthen (Stellan Skarsgard) a Jedi in the Star Wars series? Andor? The quick response to this fan theory that began to circulate timidly at the end of September, gained weight after episode 10 of Andor and which has come out on internet forums in the loudest way possible now after episode 11, Ferrix’s daughter, is a resounding no: no, Luthen is not a Jedi. And he is a no, also, without having to ask the showrunner, Tony Gilroy, nor the executive producers, nor the writers, nor Stellan Skarsgard himself. Now I go with the justification. The slightly longer answer is: are you really not getting what the character is really about, you didn’t pay attention to Luthen’s monologue in episode 10 and you don’t know what this series is about? The theory started in a timid way after episode 3. A fan on Reddit wrote: “Luthen walks into the city holding his staff, not using it for support but just holding it, the way he does it looks to me like he’s used to holding something else that way. Perhaps a lightsaber. Not to mention how the stick folded up and he tucked it into his coat.So I’m thinking Luthen might be a Jedi, a survivor of Order 66, who subsequently went into hiding and worked his way up through the Senate to gain an advantage to the point where he could initiate the rebellion and counterattack against the emperor”. As you can see, there is little clue there. As he had given Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) a kyber crystal (just like Jyn Erso’s kyber crystal necklace in the movie Rogue One, but not the same) to guarantee his commitment to Aldhani’s mission, and the kyber crystals are used to power lightsabers, the theory began to gain weight, although not excessive notoriety among fans of the series, more busy with the plot.

But, of course, episode 11 has arrived and this theory of Andor has received a push. Luthen steps out of his hypnotic Haulcraft Fund (we can already say that after the Millennium Falcon it’s the most amazing ship in Star Wars) to visit rebel leader Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker) and convince him that some sacrifice is necessary… The case is that when Luthen arrives, the guards who watch over Gerrera’s safety demand Stellan Skarsgard’s character to hand over all weapons. “What’s this for?” Luthen says, and one of the guards finds, while frisking him, a striking brown baton-shaped device that looks powerfully like a lightsaber. It is the same retractable cane that we have already seen the character open and close, but, well, that kills any theory right away, don’t you think?

The evidence, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is weak. I could go on about how it doesn’t make sense for Luthen to be a Jedi from a plot point of view, starting with the mere fact that a Jedi wouldn’t have made the speech he did in episode 10 about the sacrifices he had to make to become a Jedi. start the rebellion. If he were a Jedi, Luthen would have given up on the concept of family long ago, not for the rebellion. But it is that the argument that Luthen is a Jedi falls under its own weight even in episode 11. Just the fact of making Saw Gerrera believe, knowing full well that he is not going to convince him, but sowing the benefit of the doubt, That one of his men might be a spy for Luthen is not Jedi-like. The Jedi have other resources: straight-up diplomacy! The truth ahead! Luthen has to use the methods of his enemy (the Empire) to defeat him. Not to mention that living in the city of Luthen would be much more exposed to the Inquisitors and that would be taking the series from the epic of the spies to the lyric of the Jedi that other Star Wars products have already told us about.

But there is more (aside from the fact that the staff can be just a staff, or even an old lightsaber that you can use to defend yourself without being a jedi). In the last episode, some fans wanted to see the maneuvers of a Jedi in Luthen’s fabulous escape from Imperial control. Luthen’s ship, after attacking the Star Destroyer, survives TIE fighters with technology reminiscent of lightsabers. If he has kyber crystals, it’s more than likely that he could have used them for anything other than making lightsabers, don’t you think? How about a new weapon for your ship?
