Expected by many 1899 finally debuted on Netflix, bringing many doubts and leaving several questions open, the main of which is: who is the mysterious boy who appeared in the series? This question is only answered in the final episodes of the production, so if you haven’t watched it yet and don’t want spoilers, you better stop reading here.
The story of 1899 begins with a ship, the Kerberos, loaded with European immigrants who leave for New York to try a better life in the United States. All was going well on the voyage, but they are surprised by Prometheus, a ship of equal size which is adrift and had already been considered missing.
Surprised, the captain of Kerberos Eyk (Andreas Pietschmann). he decides to go to the abandoned ship to see if there are still people alive there, and as expected, all the crew are dead. But, to everyone’s surprise, they find a little boy alive inside a closet.
The boy is the mysterious character and one of the main figures of the series. He carries a pyramid with him and doesn’t communicate with anyone, he doesn’t even say his name. And so he continues for most of the chapters.
It turns out that strange and scary situations start happening, such as mass suicide, and one of the crew, who is a religious devotee, accuses the boy of being the Devil and causing all these tragedies. Thus a revolt is created to kill him, but Maura (one of the protagonists) protects him from the fanatics.
Is the Mystery Boy the Devil?
As the chapters progress 1899, we learn that the boy’s name is Elliot and that he is not the devil. In fact, he is Maura’s son with Daniel, also a mysterious man who appeared in Kerberos.
Although the protagonist did not remember anything, it was she who created a simulation for the boy to stay alive, since he has a terminal disease. Therefore, Prometheus, Kerberos, the ocean and everything that happens in the series are not real, but part of an experiment that she created to keep the boy alive.

The other passengers on the boat are, in fact, experimental guinea pigs who wanted to erase their memories. And to stop this endless cycle of death, destruction and tragedy, Maura must wake up, remember what happened, and put an end to the simulation.
Is Elliot dead or alive?
In the fantasy created by Maura, the boy is alive and well, while in real life he is facing a terminal illness. As in the last minutes of the story of 1899 the protagonist manages to wake up and leave the simulation, it is possible that now she will find Elliot ill and that he will die in the next few seasons.
