Leclerc celebrates second place in Abu Dhabi: “I gave 110% from the first lap”

Charles Leclerc is the Formula 1 vice world champion in 2022. The Monegasque of Ferrari closed the Abu Dhabi GP, held this Sunday (20), in second place and ahead of his rival Sergio Pérez, of Red Bull, reaching 308 points and finishing the best season in his short Formula 1 career, despite failing to challenge Max Verstappen for the title.

In the post-race interview with former driver and world champion Jenson Button, Leclerc spoke of the immense effort from the start of the race to overtake Pérez in strategy. It was the Monegasque’s tenth podium in the 2022 season.

“I gave 110% from the first lap. We had a perfect sprint today, we had nothing else to do. We knew the only chance to beat Checo today was with a different strategy and using tire management, which we we did well today. I was able to make the one-stop strategy work and I’m happy,” said Charles.

Despite coming away from Verstappen, Leclerc celebrated the steps he made with Ferrari in 2022. This season the team broke the victory fast that had lasted since 2019, and Charles returned to the top step of the podium with triumphs in Bahrain, Australia and Austria.

“I hope next year we can take a step forward and fight for the title. But considering what we did last year, it’s a big step forward. We improved at the end of the season in terms of strategy, we still have to work on it .” on the race pace because we struggle on Sunday, but during the winter break we’ll push to recover”.

Formula 1 officially returns on March 5, 2023, with the opening of the next season in Bahrain. Before that, the category still tests newcomers and also tires in Abu Dhabi.
