MPF and MP recommend the governor of MT to seek the support of the National Force

The Attorney General of Mato Grosso and the State Attorney’s Office recommended this Sunday 20 to the interim governor, Otaviano Pivetta (PDT), to ask for help from the National Force to free the streets blocked by anti-democratic protests.

The bodies also suggest mobilizing the Military Police in “hot spots of tension” to avoid new blockades and interdictions. The proposal is that the military police occupy possible protest points and form a “safety belt” to keep traffic free.

The governor has until 12 noon on Monday 21st to say whether or not he accepts the terms of the recommendation and to justify the decision.

The proposal had already been put forward in a meeting between the Secretariat of Public Safety of Mato Grosso, the Federal Traffic Police (PRF), the Federal Police (PF) and the Federal and State Public Prosecutors, but the government had been resistant to the request for reinforcement .

The document mentions that armed people and calls for military intervention have been seen at “several” checkpoints in Mato Grosso and that at least three days ago the movement underwent “significant radicalisation”.

“With the installation of explosive tools (dynamite), spillage of oil and grain, fires at the end of the lanes, felling of trees, etc., endangering the life and safety of pedestrians, drivers, passengers and the participants themselves to the movements,” says an excerpt from the recommendation.

Protesters tried to blow up a bridge in the municipality of Pontes and Lacerda and shot at federal public agents in the municipality of Sinop. On the night of Saturday the 19th, an armed group also attacked and set fire to a base of the Rota do Oeste concession, on the BR-163, between Lucas do Rio Verde and Nova Mutum.

Prosecutors say there is a lack of “articulation, cooperation and planning” between federal and state security forces to avoid new blockades and thus “faithfully comply” with the decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) which resulted in the release of all occupied public roads for undemocratic acts.

The Federal Traffic Police (PRF) has already asked the Ministry of Justice and Public Security for the support of the National Force to act in the blockades and interdictions on federal highways, but the STF understands that the request must come from the governors.
