The resistance continues on and off the pitch and has allies such as Harry Kane, from the England team, who has decided to ignore FIFA
The 2022 World Cup kicked off on November 20, and aside from the obvious question which team will be the champions, another question deserves attention: what will be the treatment of the LGBTQIAP+ community during the competition?
Qatar is the subject of much criticism – which has become even stronger with hosting the World Cup – for its history of lack of respect for human rights.
Recently, in an interview with German TV, Khalid Salman, a former player of the Qatar national team and ambassador of the World Cup, defined homosexuality as “mental damage” and added that it is “haram”, a sin prohibited by the ‘Islam. . According to the ambassador, homosexual visitors will be tolerated as long as they “accept our rules”.

Among the rules, Code 1 of the 2004 Qatar Penal Code states that courts can apply Sharia law (the legal system of Islam) to impose the death penalty on homosexuals, according to the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA ).
Salma’s statement was not isolated. Another representative of the country, Major General Abdulaziz Abdullah Al Ansari, told the Associated Press news agency that “it is not possible to guarantee the safety of LGBTQ people during the World Cup”, and asked to avoid community symbols .
In this hostile scenario, voices of the resistance and allies are raised. Tottenham and England striker Harry Kane has also decided to challenge FIFA and will wear his traditional captain’s armband, with the colors of the LGBTQIA+ flag and the words “One Love”, in the match against Iran this Monday at 10 .
The Coletivo de Torcidas Canarinhos LGBTQ+, for example, which brings together fans of different Brazilian clubs with the aim of including and combating prejudice in football, to take action.
First they questioned Fifa about the demonstrations, and the highest football entity assured, in a statement, that flags with the colors of the rainbow will be allowed during the Cup.
The most recent attitude is the launch of an LGBTQIAP+ Guide, specifically aimed at the sporting event. The idea is to guide all those present at the Cup on how to enjoy the event “with peace of mind and safety”, as well as gather information on local legislation and denounce acts of discrimination step by step. The guide can be downloaded from the website: https://www.torcidaslgbt.com.br/.
The expectation is that in the 29 days that the World Cup in Qatar will last, they will surprise and make headlines for great matches, incredible goals and for breaking taboos, as the first time that women will be present in competition refereeing.
