Hulu’s hit series “The Dropout,” which premiered in Brazil on Star+, has increasingly gained prominence by telling the story of Elizabeth Holmes, a biotech businesswoman convicted of fraud.
The Dropout tells the incredible story of the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes, founder of Theranos. Holmes was considered a business prodigy and the youngest woman to become a billionaire, even as she was compared to names like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.
Creator of the Theranos start-up, the entrepreneur claimed to have developed a technology that would revolutionize blood testing. With it, self-diagnosis would be possible without leaving home, with just a drop of blood. This ambitious Theranos project has garnered attention as it could change America’s healthcare system forever.
In 2015, Forbes named Elizabeth the nation’s youngest billionaire after Theranos was valued at $9 billion. However, just as her rise was meteoric, her fall was extremely rapid as rumors of fraud began in the company. Recently, Elizabeth Holmes was convicted of wire fraud and conspiracy and received an 11-year prison sentence.
“The Dropout” follows a similar formula to Netflix’s “Inventing Anna” and delves into Holmes’ schemes to a climax, presenting the character’s motivations and desires.
The series is based on a podcast of the same name and stars Amanda Seyfried. The production racks up six Emmy nominations, with emphasis on Seyfried herself, a front-runner for the award.
